If you are able to do these things, then you will never have to worry even if you dropped the compass.
Learn to find shelter. Caves, overhanging cliffs, boulders, even fallen trees can be used to protect yourself from the elements. Know what you need to build a proper structure that can keep away the sun, wind, rain and even snow. Be able to build a shelter from the only available materials in your environment.
Many campgrounds provide fun activities like pools, playgrounds, fishing or recreational boating, so check your local listings to see what adventures lie ahead.
It’s important when traveling to bring along the proper clothing. Always include some rain and windwear, a fleece jacket is also a good idea. A first aid kit and plenty of drinking water should always be available. Of course if you are planning on doing any outdoor activities in the winter you will need more clothing etc.
Both sports demand having the proper equipment and knowledge for safety reasons. Many National Parks offer established climbing routes that will have a wide range of difficulty levels; usually no permits are needed, unless an overnight stay in backcountry is involved. It is important to check weather conditions beforehand and use caution, never climb alone.

Build a fire. The importance of a fire cannot be emphasized enough. A fire can keep you warm, light up your area, cook food and discourage animals from coming close. Look for food and a source of water. Be able to tell which plants are edible and which are not. Also, know how to handle plants that you have to crack, such as coconuts. You might also need to learn how to fish or track and trap animals and prepare them for cooking. You can also learn the skill of telling which source of water is safe to drink. For safety, be able to find some way to heat water to sterilize it.
Learn basic first aid so you’ll know what to do in case of injuries or sickness.
Learn how to make weapons or equipment using whatever is available â€" rocks, branches, leaves or vines. They will come in handy as substitutes for a knife, club, hammer or yes, even a pillow.
Learn the skill of knowing what to do when you encounter a wild animal. Sometimes, running away or climbing a tree is not the best solution.
Keep a level head so you can think straight and not make mistakes. Remember that the wilderness is not your enemy. You just need to work with it in order to survive. Don't forget sunscreen, bug spray and hygiene items. Toilet paper and paper towels are absolute necessities. Bring along some soap and toothpaste, but leave the hair gel and makeup at home. Mother Nature doesn't care what you look like. She just wants you to enjoy your stay.
A definite upcoming trend is more and more people seeking untouched locales and wilderness. Always be prepared for the weather when hiking. Carry a daypack with some water, a rain/wind jacket, a fleece/wool jacket or sweater, a first aid kit and some food. Good hiking boots are essential. On some of your hikes it is quite likely you will come across wildlife such as moose, black bears and grizzly bears, big horn sheep and deer.
Avoid camping in low places--Air flow gets stagnant and typically moisture settles more. Also, if it rains whilst your tent is up, there's a greater chance of water collecting when you're camped in a low lying area. Lastly, position your tent so that your head is uphill wherever you camp (seeing as most locations are rarely ever flat).
